Our approach

Built with communities, step by step.

Seven stages guide every programme — from first conversations to models communities can carry forward themselves.

  1. Listen

Understand the community, its needs and existing strengths.

  2. Identify

Find practical opportunities and locally relevant solutions.

  3. Build skills

Develop knowledge, technical capabilities and confidence.

  4. Create

Support communities in turning skills and resources into products, services and solutions.

  5. Add value

Introduce appropriate technology, processing, design, packaging and other value-addition opportunities.

  6. Connect

Build partnerships and connect products and initiatives with markets and institutions.

  7. Sustain

Strengthen models so communities can continue and grow their work.

What we hold to

Principles behind the steps.

Communities lead

People closest to a challenge understand it best. We begin by listening, and communities shape the solutions that follow.

Local first

Local knowledge, local resources and local participation are the foundation of everything we build — not an afterthought.

Practical over perfect

We favour solutions that work in real conditions: appropriate technology, honest materials and models communities can sustain.

Connected, not siloed

Livelihoods, health, technology and the environment are one fabric. Our programmes are designed to strengthen each other.
